Doraville council approves three rotating community murals for city parks

The Doraville City Council voted July 15 to approve three community murals created through a grant obtained by DART and planned for installation and rotation across city parks.
DART’s presenter (speaker 13) told the council the grant-funded murals are large-scale works painted on durable plywood panels and will be installed on modular freestanding structures or fences so they can be rotated among Brook Park, English Oak Park and Vernon Harper (Honeysuckle) Park over a one-year period. The panel dimensions are 4 feet by 8 feet; DART will handle maintenance and installation.
The council discussed locations, the art-commission review process and installation details. Council member Ray (speaker 14) suggested providing plaque or QR-code information to explain who made the murals and DART’s role; the presenter said the project included community events and involvement from neighborhood associations, schools and faith groups. "It'd be cool to have, you know, a little info plaque or some way for people to see who how where these came from," Ray said.
Council member Armistead (speaker 10) moved to approve the murals as presented; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The council noted the art commission had reviewed and approved the submissions during the commission’s evaluation process and that the city would re-evaluate the installations in June 2027 to decide whether to retain them longer or remove them.
The presentation noted the murals were finalists selected after a youth design process and that DART planned community painting events guided by artists. The city clarified that any grant-funded work on city property requires written approval by the city before submission to a grantor.
The council’s approval authorizes the three murals to be installed and displayed on the temporary panel structures with DART responsible for maintenance and evaluation after the one-year display period.
