Spencer-Owen board unanimously approves donations, facility repairs and tech contract

The board accepted $2,075 from New Beginnings Pregnancy Resource for the Owen Valley Backpack Buddies program and $5,000 from Cook Incorporated designated for the district’s Patriot Manufacturing program. Administrator (introduced at the meeting) requested both donations and the motions were approved 5 to 0.
Why it matters: the package of approvals covers near-term classroom supports, staffing and building repairs that district staff said are needed before the school year begins. Superintendent Klein and other administrators framed the items as operational necessities rather than policy changes.

"The roof is not leaking, but the shingles are literally cracking just from poor manufacturing," Superintendent Klein said. - Gosport HVAC work: the board approved demolition and removal of abandoned unit ventilators and related exterior limestone-panel repairs with an estimate provided at $105,860. - VAV controllers and bond funds: replacement and repair of VAV controllers (to restore designed airflow modulation) were approved; staff said funding would come from remaining bond funds (amounts are listed in the board materials provided to members). - Lightspeed contract and SB 159 compliance: the board approved a three-year Lightspeed Security and Impact Bundle to replace GoGuardian over time and provide parents an option to exert additional device controls at home. All motions considered that evening were moved, seconded and approved on roll-call votes recorded as unanimous (5 to 0). No public comments were offered during the agenda-item comment period.
The board also approved omnibus personnel items (resignations, employment and extra-curricular recommendations) and closed the meeting by setting its next regular meeting for Aug. 13 and announcing an upcoming board retreat.
What’s next: facilities items that require bidding or contractor work (the Gosport roof and HVAC projects) will proceed through the district’s procurement process; the Lightspeed rollout will include professional development for teachers and an information push for parents once the board’s purchase is finalized.
