Police chief reports fatal crash, arrests and spike in speeding on two township corridors

East Cocalico Township's police chief told the Board of Supervisors on July 16 that the department responded to a fatal crash and several other incidents in June and reported the results of multiple speed studies.
The chief said officers responded June 26 to a crash on the 2300 block of North Reading Road in which the driver of a convertible was the sole occupant and was pronounced deceased at the scene; the crash remains under investigation. The chief also reported two arrests in East Cocalico Township in June on outstanding warrants.
The department conducted targeted speed studies in multiple locations. The chief said a weeklong study in the 100 block of Adamstown Road recorded an average speed of 35.1 mph with a top speed of 54 mph in a 35-mph zone. Another study in the 900 block of West Swartzville Road recorded an average of 47 mph and a top speed of 100 mph where the posted limit is 40 mph; the chief described that location as a long straightaway where very high speeds occur. In total, the department issued 50 speeding citations during recent enforcement details.
The chief said the department will continue targeted enforcement and an educational approach for juveniles operating prohibited motorized devices, with warnings and parent notifications when appropriate. The department also recognized an officer for receiving the Lancaster County DUI Top Gun Award for 2025.
Board members asked clarifying questions about locations and safety measures; the chief said the fatal crash was not intersection-related and remains under investigation.
