Dodge County approves McIntosh County shelter MOA, routine financial items and community sponsorships

The Dodge County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a Memorandum of Agreement with McIntosh County for a shelter plan at its Oct. 6 meeting and completed several routine administrative items.
Commissioner Sharon Cobb Flanagan moved to approve the McIntosh County MOA; Commissioner Brian Watkins seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The minutes note that the Red Cross and the Dodge County Eastman Development Authority would be responsible for any damages to the Terry Coleman Center under the agreement.
The board approved accounts payable totaling $193,431.30 after a motion by Commissioner Jeffrey Jones. The board also addressed a clerical error on a 2024 tax bill: it approved a $124.10 refund so the taxpayer could pay the correct $69.73 bill (penalties and interest excluded). The clerk will ask the school board to process a matching refund to balance their accounts.
Commissioner Jones moved to sponsor Music on Main for $350 and to purchase a memorial brick for the Leave It Better Park-Alleyway Project for $100; both sponsorships were approved unanimously. County Manager Conner Bearden presented the second-quarter building inspection report, reported Dodge County’s unemployment rate at 3.7% (the lowest in the Heart of Georgia Altamaha area), and noted the county’s designation as a National Weather Service Storm Ready Community. Manager Bearden also said Eastman Commons requested moving the courthouse clock to the courthouse grounds; the board had no objections.
During public comments, Randy Thompson of Middle Georgia State University said enrollment was up 5% and mentioned a $16 million expansion project at the school. Phil Bearden thanked the board for supporting the airport. The meeting adjourned at 7:11 p.m.
