The Beaufort County Board of Voter Registration and Elections on Jan. 15 elected new leadership for the 2025–27 term, choosing Matt Sweeney as chair, Jim Bakker as vice chair and Mike Sawicki as secretary.
The nominations were made from the floor and approved by voice/hand raise. The board confirmed Mike Sawicki as secretary after a member asked whether he was certified; a board member said Sawicki “has been appointed by the governor and he is undergoing the training that he’s supposed to take during the first 18 months.” The board then carried the nominations for vice chair and chair by the same voice‑vote method.
The elections occurred at the start of the meeting during the new‑business agenda item on officer nominations. Members followed routine procedure: nominations, seconds and a group voice vote. The board also confirmed committee assignments immediately after the officer votes.
The new leadership will oversee committee rosters and upcoming election planning, including a budget submission deadline the board must meet this month. The board set committee assignments for budget and finance, rules, legislative affairs, redistricting and facilities and agreed to revisit those rosters when a replacement for a vacant seat is appointed.
The meeting adjourned after the board covered operating and capital budget matters, discussed early voting center options and heard the director’s report on legislative proposals and outreach.
