Duncan Unified board approves fundraising calendar, personnel moves and Savvas math curriculum

The Duncan Unified District governing board on July 13 approved a package of routine operational and personnel items, including the district’s 2026–2027 fundraising calendar, several hires and volunteer coaches, a slate of substitute teachers, sole‑source vendor approvals and the SAVVAS math curriculum.
The meeting, called to order by President Mike Sweetser at 6:03 p.m. at the District Office, recorded a roll call showing one absence: Member James Hughes. Clerk Holly McCluskey moved acceptance of the consent agenda, which included routine minutes, payroll and expense vouchers, auxiliary and activities financial statements and issuance of a Notice of Inadequacy of Classroom Performance; Member Wade Wagley seconded, and the motion carried by roll call (Sweetser, McCluskey, Wagley, Harrington voting yes; Hughes absent).
On new business, the board approved the district’s listed fundraising events for the 2026–2027 school year after Superintendent Eldon Merrell noted the list is intended to be inclusive and can be added to during the year. President Mike Sweetser moved the motion; Clerk Holly McCluskey seconded. The motion passed by roll call (Hughes absent).
The board accepted the resignation of Mia Shaw. Member Wagley moved to approve the resignation; President Sweetser seconded; the motion carried by roll call (Hughes absent).
The board approved the hiring of Caitlynn Corbin as an elementary school aide. Member Wagley moved and Clerk McCluskey seconded; the motion carried by roll call (Hughes absent).
The board also approved use of district facilities for the Duncan Youth Activity Organization for the 2026–2027 school year. President Sweetser moved the motion; Member Pamela Harrington seconded; the motion carried by roll call (Hughes absent).
Volunteer coaches Seth Harris (athletic trainer for all sports) and Chad Penry (high‑school football) were approved after the Superintendent described roles and scope. Clerk McCluskey moved to approve the volunteers; Member Harrington seconded; the motion carried by roll call (Hughes absent).
A slate of regular substitute teachers — Orpha Bell, Sue Jones, Gilbert Padilla, Terrill Rowley, Jacqueline Sanchez and Jade Savant — was approved. The Superintendent noted these were regular substitutes rather than long‑term appointments and that several have worked for the district before. The board approved the SAVVAS math curriculum after the Superintendent said teachers selected it and it had been on display for the required number of days. President Sweetser moved; Member Wagley seconded; the motion carried by roll call (Hughes absent).
The Business Manager explained the need to approve sole‑source vendors for routine district operations and gave examples of typical circumstances requiring such approvals; the board approved the listed sole‑source vendors. Clerk McCluskey moved; President Sweetser seconded; the motion carried by roll call (Hughes absent).
