Houston parks board approves May minutes; staff reports pool opening, swim lessons and youth sports updates

President Rachel Choate called the Houston Parks and Recreation meeting to order at 6 p.m. on June 11 in the Houston Pool Community Room and the board approved the May minutes unanimously after a motion by board member PJ Murray and a second from board member Jake Brookshire.
Parks staff reported that the pool opening went well. Robbie Mortensen said a new West Port Pools employee has worked onsite three times and that operations have been satisfactory. Swim lessons are scheduled to begin June 27; the minutes list enrollment figures for levels 1–4 but the transcript records those numbers as ranges and ambiguous entries (see clarifying details). Instructor Viki Narancich will lead weekly "Mommy and Me" swimming classes on June 20, July 25, Aug. 1 and Aug. 8.
Youth T-ball and toss-ball games began the previous evening, Mortensen reported, and fall soccer registration is set to open July 1. The board discussed plans for a fall flag football league pending placement with an outside league, and staff said water aerobics sessions have been canceled at times because of weather.
On the golf course, Mortensen said the course pump is functioning, staffing is complete, the TCMH tournament had a strong turnout and the course currently lists 96 members. President Choate suggested organizing a children's golf league or tournament in the future and praised lessons organized by Larry Benoist.
Staff noted that inmates clean the pool bathrooms daily but that the bathrooms are regularly left trashed; no other damage has been reported. The minutes record no further formal actions at the meeting beyond the approval of the May minutes and the departmental updates presented.
