McBee council debates water-billing plan, approves $2,000 purchase of tennis-court light poles

Council Member Glenn Odom pressed the council about a prior motion to require customers owing more than $1,000 to pay $50 per week; Odom said one account on the list owed about $3,800 and another about $7,700 and asked why the schedule had not been implemented. Mayor John Campolong responded that the town would review past due accounts and work with customers individually, and then told Odom he must recuse from water discussions because of a perceived competitive conflict. Odom disputed the recusal, saying he had checked with ethics authorities and repeated that the council's earlier vote should be honored. The minutes report the exchange and the mayor closing the floor on the matter.
Council Member A.C. McLeod Jr. reported finding eight 30-foot light poles removed from Coker College and asked for approval to buy them for $2,000 (listed as $250 apiece). Council Member Charlie Sutton moved to approve spending $2,000; Mayor John Campolong seconded the motion and council voted "All in Favor." The purchase was described as for the town's tennis court lighting.
The council also announced Town Hall would be closed Dec. 24-25, 2020 and the mayor said local parades were being canceled or modified because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The meeting ended on a motion to adjourn by Mayor Campolong, seconded by Charlie Sutton, with council voting "All in Favor."
