Council hears reports on potential college site, grant opportunities and water-line cooperation

Council Member Glenn Odom updated the Town of McBee council Nov. 2 on regional efforts to expand Northeastern Technical College and on several related grant and infrastructure opportunities.
Odom said he attended meetings with local leaders and House Speaker Jay Lucas and reported positive interest in locating additional technical college resources in the area. He described ongoing talks about acquiring additional acreage (he referenced an entity called “Alligator” holding optioned land) and said local and regional partners are exploring funding packages including an Economic Development Administration (EDA) application for approximately $2 million paired with matching funds from Columbia.
Odom also said the Pee Dee Council of Governments (COG) can support grant applications to repave the road by the tennis courts and to provide sidewalks for students; he said another grant stream could help bring wastewater connections to low‑income homeowners in the town and surrounding area. Lindsey Privette noted county and neighboring towns are coordinating water-line work toward Pageland.
Council members expressed support and asked staff to pursue grant-writing assistance, with Council Member Charlie Sutton and others acknowledging the need to stay engaged with grant partners. No formal vote or funding commitment was made at the Nov. 2 meeting; Odom said the projects remain in planning and application stages.
