Golden Gate Petroleum outlines Ely station, council approves broadband support letter

At the Aug. 22 Ely City Council meeting, Golden Gate Petroleum provided details about its planned convenience and travel center at 141–147 N. US Highway 93, and the council unanimously approved a support letter backing Commnet Broadband’s BEAD‑funded infrastructure deployment.
District manager Jesse Nopens said the site will include regular and diesel fuel pumps, a drive‑through car wash, a propane fill station, slot machines and an on‑site KKC Deli expected to open Sept. 23. An RV park of approximately 16 spaces is planned; Nopens said a recent job fair produced roughly 28 hires with 23 completing onboarding and the operation expects to staff 20–25 employees. The company’s target for opening the facility is the week of Sept. 16.
Council members asked about traffic flow and the new median on Highway 93. Nopens said there will be no left turns out of the site and that some traffic may need to use the adjacent golf course road as a consequence. He offered to follow up in writing on questions about repaving service roads and other local impacts.
Separately, the council voted unanimously to approve a support letter for Commnet Broadband’s efforts to deploy broadband using Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) funding in the Ely area, a measure the council described as supporting expanded internet access for residents.
Mayor Nathan Robertson thanked Golden Gate Petroleum for updating the council on its project timeline and the company’s outreach to staffing and local traffic questions.
