City of Ely accepts $610,000 federal grant to install security cameras downtown

The Ely City Council voted unanimously Oct. 24 to accept a $610,000 FY24 COPS Office Technology and Equipment Program (TEP) grant for a downtown security camera installation project.
City Clerk Jennifer Lee told the council the award requires no city match and that semiannual reports will require coordination with the White Pine County Sheriff's office on community-policing strategies related to the cameras. She also highlighted grant provisions restricting equipment manufactured by companies connected to the government of China and a Buy America preference requiring at least 55% U.S. component content for cameras.
Council members approved the grant so Mayor Robertson can sign the grant agreement and staff can begin procurement and coordinating technical and reporting tasks with law enforcement.
City staff said they will ensure procurement follows the grant’s statutory restrictions and the Buy America preference and coordinate deployment plans and privacy considerations with the sheriff’s office and city IT/administration.
