Board hears athletics achievements and student-services report including 106 McKinney Vento students

Orchard View Schools athletic staff and Student Services leaders presented program updates at the June 15 meeting.
Athletic Directors Leroy Hackley and Chris Norkus reviewed participation and recent achievements across middle- and high-school programs. They noted facility and equipment improvements (referee and coach room upgrades, remodeled football stadium, replacement pole-vault and high-jump mats provided at no cost), the purchase of a mobile field-painting robot, and student accomplishments including a 4x100 relay tying a long-standing record and individual regional and state recognition for other athletes.
E'lyse Benson, Student Services Support Coordinator, outlined her duties and provided McKinney Vento and foster-care caseload information: the district had 106 McKinney Vento students this year, reached 81 families, arranged holiday adoptions for 77 students, facilitated 14 outside-counseling referrals, provided groceries to 21 families and distributed 65 Goodwill $25 certificates totaling $1,625.
Superintendent Tom Hamilton and Executive Services Assistant Gretchen Beauleaux also described Schools of Choice procedures for 2026–27, saying the district may run lotteries in up to three grade levels and will prioritize OV preschool attendees and siblings; staff will report back on whether Orchard View accepts the most Schools of Choice students.
