Orchard View board approves MHSAA membership, wage increase and Chartwells contract; upholds expulsions

The Orchard View Schools Board of Education on June 15 voted to approve a package of resolutions and contracts and to uphold student expulsions following closed-session appeal hearings.
On roll call, the board approved a resolution to maintain membership in the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). The motion was made by L. Nelson and supported by T. Joppie; the vote was recorded as Ayes: J. Taylor, L. Nelson, S. Horsly, J. Wydeck and T. Joppie, Nays: none (carried 5-0).
The board also approved a 3% wage increase for Head Start/Great Start staff consistent with the ISD’s budget framework. Brandy Carey, Community Education Director, described the proposal and noted that Great Start funding would not come from the Head Start base grant and that Head Start retro pay from Dec. 1, 2025 through June 30, 2026 would be repaid through the ISD. The motion to approve the wage increase was made by J. Taylor, supported by J. Wydeck, and carried 5-0.
Separately, the board authorized continuing the district’s food service contract with Chartwells for the 2026–27 school year. Superintendent Tom Hamilton presented the recommendation. The motion by J. Taylor, supported by T. Joppie, carried 5-0.
Disciplinary actions were the other substantive outcomes. After moving into closed session to hear appeals and disciplinary matters, the board returned to open session and recorded several votes: the board recommended a 180-day expulsion with the option of MCVA for student HL262105G (motion L. Nelson; support J. Taylor; carried 5-0) and recommended a 180-day expulsion with the option of ILC for student HB260206J (motion L. Nelson; support J. Taylor; carried 5-0). The board also denied an expulsion appeal for student MM260105C (motion J. Taylor; support J. Wydeck; carried 5-0).
Procedurally, the board moved into closed session at 8:34 p.m. on a motion by J. Taylor, supported by T. Joppie; roll call reflected five ayes and no nays. The board resumed open session at 9:17 p.m. and adjourned at 9:25 p.m.
