Ely council proclaims Radon Action Month, directs federal project submissions and updates personnel policy

At its Jan. 9 meeting the Ely City Council adopted a proclamation declaring February 2025 "National Radon Action Month in Ely," authorized a consultant to pursue federal Community Project Funding (CPF) for two previously submitted projects, updated municipal personnel policy language, and tabled a telecom-lease request for additional attorney review.
Jessica Hendrickson, Extension County Coordinator, briefed the council on radon, telling members the gas is "the second leading cause of lung cancer" and that one in four Nevada homes may have elevated radon levels; the proclamation directs outreach and notes free radon-test kits are available in January and February at Extension offices.
On funding, Council approved directing PORTER Group LLC to re-submit CPF applications on the city's behalf for residential water-service metering (a program previously discussed, estimated in prior discussions to be as large as $5 million) and a City Hall renovation project. Council members said these are resubmissions of projects already prepared for federal consideration and that they will consult with their congressional delegation about why prior submissions did not advance.
City Treasurer/HR Director Janette Trask presented 2024 revisions to the City of Ely Personnel Policy (primarily editorial updates tied to new legislation and removal of COVID-specific provisions); the council approved the revisions unanimously.
A request from Verizon to allow Vertical Bridge to lease and manage Verizon's interest in a City-owned site, with potential subleases to other telecom companies, was tabled after City Attorney Chris Arabia said he had questions to discuss with Verizon. Councilman Dennis Perea asked staff to review historical lease-rate arrangements, noting it "doesn't look like this has been adjusted for a market rate since 1991." The item was tabled for follow-up and possible staff/attorney report at a later meeting.
