The Ely City Council on Jan. 9 unanimously approved Resolution 2025-01 urging the Nevada Legislature to revise school-construction funding to address the needs of rural districts such as White Pine County.
White Pine School District Superintendent Adam Young told the council he and district trustees met with legislators and are hopeful for proposed legislation, including a placeholder bill for direct appropriation. He framed the request as necessary to replace two schools built in 1909 and 1913, saying new facilities would improve student safety and community economic development.
The resolution notes that current funding mechanisms are "insufficient to provide the White Pine County School District with the necessary resources to replace these antiquated facilities" and calls for state-level grants, enhanced bonding, or other funding solutions tailored to rural districts' unique challenges.
Councilwoman Jerri Lynn Williams-Harper moved to adopt Resolution 2025-01 and Councilwoman Melody Van Camp seconded the motion; the vote was unanimous. Superintendent Young thanked council members who attended a recent legislator event and said southern Nevada lawmakers have been receptive to the rural-district concerns raised during outreach.
The resolution will be filed as an expression of municipal support for state legislative action; the council did not appropriate new local funds at the meeting.
