Parents tell Pflugerville ISD board classrooms are unsafe; call for clearer communication and action

"These incidents effectively bring learning to a screeching halt," Brian Shipman told the board, describing recurring behavior in his son's early‑elementary classroom at Row/Role Lane that he said included furniture being thrown, students and teachers being struck, pencil stabbings and talk of bringing weapons to school. Shipman said the problems continued across kindergarten through second grade and that the administration's responses had not produced durable change.
Joshua Miller said he has raised similar concerns for two years about a fifth‑grade classroom, saying a student had "stabbed another kid with his pencil" and that 24 children in his daughter's classroom were being "terrorized." Miller said school staff gave parents limited notice about room clears and that transfers of the disruptive student had simply moved the problem to other classrooms.
Melanie Manuel described a broader erosion of trust between families and district leadership, alleged that some grievances are dismissed or delayed, and said parents feel forced into hiring lawyers or advocates to get action. "The erosion of trust is rampant," Manuel said.
Board President Lorigo Joes read the board's public‑comment rules before the speakers and thanked each parent after their three minutes. Trustees did not take immediate action during the meeting in response to the comments; several trustees later reiterated district commitments to safety during committee reports and the administration report.
The public commenters asked for: clearer, timelier communication when classrooms are cleared or students are moved; more decisive action when students cause physical harm; and better outcomes from the district grievance process. The board did not announce new policy changes at the meeting; administration representatives said some of the concerns would be followed up through the established grievance process and future Q's news communications.
What happens next: Parents pressed for specific follow‑ups and timetables but the board limited responses during public comment. Trustees and administrators said they would provide additional information through district follow‑up channels and the public Q's news process.
