Chad Center, the newly installed chief of the Orono Police Department, introduced himself to the Mound City Council on July 14 and summarized his first five weeks on the job.
Center said the department continues routine patrols and investigations and highlighted recent activity including a burglary. In response to council questions about an ongoing problem with impaired driving and higher traffic volumes on West Edge Boulevard during construction detours, Center said active traffic enforcement, visible patrols and outreach to local businesses about responsible alcohol service are part of the department’s strategy. He offered to provide counts of traffic stops and citations for West Edge starting June 1 to help the council evaluate enforcement levels.
Center also said the department will add a health and wellness program for officers as a departmental priority. Councilors thanked the chief for the update and asked staff to provide requested enforcement data in the coming days.
Quote: "Our cops are active trying to curb some of that behavior ... with visibility and then active traffic enforcement," Chief Center said.
Action taken: No formal action; chief introduced and council requested enforcement data beginning June 1.
