Mound council approves Avon Park playground design, chooses 3A with shade and bench options

The Mound City Council approved a Parks Commission recommendation on July 14 selecting Option 3a for Avon Park’s new playground and authorized staff to order the equipment and associated ADA improvements.
Public Works Director Ryan presented three vendors’ proposals (Landscape Structures/Flagship, GameTime/MWPE, and Northland Recreation/Little Tikes) and three variants from each. The commission recommended option 3a. Council members debated tradeoffs: one member preferred the more natural tones and slightly different amenities in option 2b, while others emphasized a wider age range and additional slides in 3a. Councilers also asked the staff to include an ADA ramp, a bench with an armrest to discourage sleeping, and a shade canopy.
Council agreed on a color scheme that will use forest/ hunter green for the slide, cinnamon for the shade canopy and brown recycled benches with bone‑tone accents. Staff said the playground, ADA ramp and fiber mulch fall within the $80,000–$110,000 budget. The motion to approve option 3a with the specified color scheme carried without opposition.
Action taken: Motion passed to approve Avon Park playground Option 3a with forest green slides, cinnamon shade, bone accents and ADA access; staff will place the order and incorporate an ADA path and bench/shade options.
