Police Chief David Pernice told the Union City Borough Council on Aug. 27 that a candidate previously approved for hire has not responded to attempts at contact and that he is assuming the person is no longer interested.
"He has tried to make contact but has had no luck. He is assuming he is no longer interested," Pernice said, adding that he will reach out to the hiring consortium (there are 32 candidates on the list), work with the Civil Service Commission to set up oral exams and send letters to potential candidates. Pernice said he would like to hire two part‑time officers, though only one was approved at an earlier meeting; council agreed to continue a search for one part‑time officer.
The chief’s remarks were presented as an operational update; no formal personnel action or vote was recorded at the Aug. 27 meeting. Council did not provide additional direction beyond agreeing to proceed with searches and requesting staff to coordinate required Civil Service procedures.
The council’s next meeting on Sept. 16 includes a public hearing on a zoning amendment and other agenda items noted by the Borough Manager.
