Union City plans sinkhole repairs in Municipal Lot No. 1, schedules smoke-and-dye testing and seeks paving quotes

Union City officials said Sept. 16 they will proceed with repairs and testing after sinkholes were reported in Municipal Lot No. 1. Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips said the borough met with Solicitor Tim Wachter and recommended filling the sinkhole, replacing about 10 feet of drainage pipe and installing a new catch basin; smoke-and-dye testing will follow once initial repairs are completed.
"It was recommended that we do a smoke and dye test," Phillips reported, describing the borough’s planned sequence of repairs and diagnostics. The borough expects Mansfield to fill the sinkhole and perform the pipe and catch-basin work; it is awaiting paving quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving for the lot surface and the catch-basin area in Municipal Lot No. 2.
Phillips said business owners in the affected area and the UCVFD will be notified once the smoke-and-dye testing is scheduled. Separately, council authorized an application for up to $100,000 in CDBG funds that could be used toward portion of the stormwater repairs in Municipal Lot No. 1.
No timeline for completion was provided; borough staff said they are waiting on contractor quotes and will schedule testing after the initial repairs are done.
