The Virginia Department of Health on June 8 presented Radford's Water Treatment Plant with a 2025 "Gold" award for performance in clarification, filtration and filter backwash — the city's 10th Gold recognition for the plant.
Lisa Crabrey, deputy field director for VDH's Office of Drinking Water, presented the award in Radford's council chambers and said the Gold designation recognizes best practices and consistent operational performance.
"There are about 120 filter plants in the state and of those only about 30 received the Gold award in 2025," Crabrey said, noting that Radford's plant met criteria for excellence in clarification, filtration and backwash.
Councilmembers and staff congratulated plant operators during the meeting. City Manager Todd Meredith said the recognition "speaks to their professionalism," and Councilmember Seth Gillespie thanked the water plant staff for their work.
The plant's award is recorded in the meeting packet; the council used the presentation segment to formally accept the award and to commend the operations crew. No regulatory or financial actions followed directly from the presentation during the meeting.
