Star Theatre roof damage will extend closure; downtown facade package over budget

Town Manager Bryce Simmons told the Stuart Town Council that while evaluating the Star Theatre roof as part of Tobacco Commission–funded HVAC and production improvements (about $156,000), staff discovered badly deteriorated roof sheathing caused by long-term condensation beneath the siding. Simmons said repair will require removing three existing roof layers, replacing the sheathing, and installing a new roof, which will complicate the planned HVAC installation and likely extend the theatre's closure through at least December rather than October.
Chris Prutting of One Family Productions, the theatre's tenant/operator, addressed the council. He described the likely impacts on programming—public and private events that may be canceled, postponed, or relocated—and said the organization may request grant extensions. Prutting asked that the Town coordinate closely on communications, including any press release.
Simmons also reported that the preliminary downtown facade package came in about one-half million dollars over available funding; the Town will revise the package and hold to the existing $15,000 per-facade program cap. A Project Management Team meeting is scheduled for June 18 and a Planning Commission (facade committee) meeting will be scheduled to move the work forward.
Council and staff did not vote on any contract changes at the meeting; council discussion focused on coordinating repairs, lease considerations, and communications with the theatre operator.
