Radford council authorizes surplus of buses, police vehicles and damaged sheriff's camper; title release approved

Radford City Council voted to surplus several city vehicles, including two Radford Transit buses, three Radford Police Department vehicles and a sheriff’s office camper that city staff described as heavily water‑damaged and not roadworthy.

Chair described the camper as jointly purchased by the sheriff’s office, the fire department and the police department and previously used as a command center for public events. Staff reported the trailer has extensive water and mold damage, inoperable slide‑out motors, unserviceable tires and evidence of rodent intrusion; in its current condition it cannot be legally towed on Virginia roadways. Because of its condition, staff recommended releasing title to the current property owner so the camper can be legally disposed of.

Council approved a motion to surplus the listed vehicles and amended the motion to authorize Mister Meredith to sign any and all paperwork required to transfer the camper’s title. The motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Council member comments asked staff to report back on any collections or insurance savings resulting from the surplus process.

What happens next: Staff will proceed with paperwork to transfer title, dispose of the camper as appropriate (sale, junking or other disposition) and return to council with information about proceeds and insurance savings.
