Radford City Council voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with Radford University to host the "Radford University Cares" mobile health clinic on city property, including library and park sites and events such as the Radford Community Fest. Amanda Hudgins, director of research and innovation for the College of Nursing at Radford University, described the clinic as faculty‑led and student‑run, offering free screening services for hypertension, diabetes and hyperlipidemia, school physicals and referrals to primary‑care providers.
Hudgins said the clinic aims to serve residents across the New River Valley and Southwest Virginia, partnering with organizations including Health Wagon, New River Valley Community Services and the Virginia Department of Health. "We're starting out... with some screening services for hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia," she said, and added the program plans to expand to telehealth and school‑based care in coming semesters.
Council members asked about liability and logistics; staff and RU representatives said the mobile unit would be administered by university personnel and clinical partners, with the city's primary contribution limited to site access and advance scheduling. The council discussed notice requirements when the unit will be on city property and recommended a 1–2 week heads up so the city can prepare parking or minor site work.
The council approved the MOU with a date correction and directed staff to finalize event notification procedures and coordinate weekly/semester schedules with university partners.
