Gloria Boyd, chair of the Radford City School Board, used the council’s public comment period to tell council members the school board is offering full-time city employees who live outside Radford the opportunity to apply for tuition-free spots for their children.
“Once accepted, to attend tuition free,” Boyd said, adding that families would follow the existing application process for tuition status and would be notified if approved. She described the benefit as “$1,000” current tuition and said the board was excited to welcome additional students.
Council members asked whether the offer would have budgetary impact. Adam Joyce, speaking for the school system, said school funding changes during the year — for example an end-of-March average daily membership recalculation and grants awarded through the year — account for much of annual budget adjustments and that the amendment the school board later requested did not require additional city funds. “It’s no city money,” Joyce said about a separate budget amendment he described.
The council did not take formal action on the tuition offer itself; Boyd framed the comment as the school board’s policy direction to be administered by the school system.
Next procedural steps and any formal policy or eligibility criteria for the tuition offer will be determined and announced by the Radford City School Board.
