Clifton council advances streetscape grant plan, committee appointments and parking-lot work

At its Oct. 4 meeting the Clifton Town Council reviewed several ongoing local projects and committee items, including a planned application for VDOT enhancement funds for a streetscape project, parking-lot work ahead of Clifton Day, committee appointments, and arts-studio proposals.

Susan Yantis said the town intends to submit a VDOT enhancement funding request with an application due Nov. 1; the council will need to approve a resolution endorsing the application and gather community letters of support. "The final Public meeting will be on November 3rd for the Streetscape Design," she said, and committee work was scheduled through December for review and approval steps.

Committee updates included a near-term push to finish the parking-lot project before Clifton Day; the council voted to send a letter authorizing Bray Wilson of Weston’s to remove materials related to that work. Chuck Rusnak reported the Historic Preservation Committee discovered Clifton Elementary was not eligible for listing under Criteria A without an expanded boundary and additional survey work; the council asked the committee to continue investigation and approved adding Bob Krajeski to the Historic Preservation Committee.

The council also discussed establishing a studio space in town for Clifton artists; several residents have expressed interest and the committee was asked to develop proposals. John Powell reported volunteer recruitment for the Haunted Trail was growing, and the council agreed to allocate Halloween budget funds to public safety and to seek two hours of police assistance for the event.

Several motions on routine business were approved unanimously, including minutes and the treasurer’s report. The meeting adjourned at 10:30 p.m.
