The Clifton Town Council voted unanimously to forward proposed text for a Civil War Trails marker about Devereux Station to the Fairfax County History Commission for review.
Margo Khosravi, representing the Historic Preservation Committee, presented the marker text and described related programming tied to the 1862/2012 Battle of Union Mills, including a spring walk to a battlefield site and a planned lecture in August. The proposed marker includes a main panel recounting the Union Army’s use of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad and a sidebar naming Capt. James Cornelius Kincheloe and Sgt. William Simpson Kincheloe and describing a November 1863 raid and subsequent federal reprisals. The marker will include three historic photos.
Wayne Nickum moved that the council recommend the proposed text be forwarded to the Fairfax County History Commission for approval; Dwayne Nitz seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The History Committee will present the draft to the Fairfax body for a month-long review and expects to bring final text back to the town council by Feb. 4, 2012.
Council members offered minor wording suggestions during the meeting; the committee will incorporate feedback from the Fairfax County review before returning the draft for final council approval.
