Council approves $62,800 electronic sign for Memorial Park from recreation fund

Council approved a proposal July 15 to replace the nonfunctioning sign at Memorial Park with an electronic sign to provide emergency notices, civic information and event advertising.
Joe Fleming, the staff presenter, said the sign would replace the nonfunctioning board and serve emergency notifications, nonprofit advertisements and seasonal displays. He asked for funding of about $62,000 (staff and council also cited figures near $62,800); he said the recreation fund has roughly $400,000 available and that staff will seek outside assistance to minimize city cost.
Council members questioned whether the sign purchase qualifies as a recreation expense; Joe said because the sign sits in City Park and would communicate park activities it would reasonably fall under maintenance and facilities for parks. After discussion, council moved and approved funding for the replacement sign by voice vote.
What’s next: staff will finalize procurement and pursue contributions or cost-sharing to reduce the city's net cost; council requested documentation from staff on funding sources and procurement steps.
