Mayor Randy Barrett received council authorization on Nov. 12 to negotiate possible annexation of two streets adjacent to the Taco Bell Plaza.
The council discussed a proposal to take the two streets shown on a submitted map that run along Route 817 and extend back toward the river, a distance described as approximately 634 feet. The council said any roads accepted by the city must be named and built to code, and town employees would assume responsibility for maintenance tasks including snow removal.
Ryan Powers moved to empower the mayor to inform the developers that the city will accept the streets into the municipal system if they are constructed to code and the businesses in the plaza are annexed into the city; the motion carried. Legal Counsel Tim Lafon asked that the mayor obtain a letter of agreement from the developer’s lawyer documenting those conditions before any further steps are taken.
Council members framed the vote as authorization to negotiate rather than final acceptance; the mayor did not seek action to force annexation at this meeting. The next steps recorded were negotiation with the developer and obtaining the written agreement requested by the city's legal counsel.
