Board advances wellness and physical-education policy updates; debate on transgender student sports participation deferred

The Valley School District Board on Sept. 18 approved new Policy 6702 (Wellness) and a revised Policy 2124 (Physical Education and Health Class) on second reading and deferred final action on other related policies until a future meeting following further review.
Superintendent Dr. Mandi Rehn presented the proposed wellness and physical-education policy changes and recommended board approval. Director Doug Elledge moved to approve Policy 6702 and the revised 2124; Nancy Cocroft seconded and the board recorded the motion as carried.
Dr. Rehn also presented for first reading revised Policy 6700 (Nutrition, Health and Physical Education), revised Policy 3205 (Sexual Harassment of Students), new Policy 6701 (Recess and Physical Activity) and Policy 3205 (Sexual Education). Those policies will be brought back for action at the next board meeting.
During the discussion Director Doug Elledge said he had concerns about "transgender students participating in sports" and asked for continued discussion. Dr. Rehn asked board members to send specific concerns and suggested policy language to her ahead of the next meeting so the matter can be discussed in detail.
