Playground committee reports $174,488 committed and seeks preliminary engineer report

Volunteers with the Washington Playground Committee told the City Council on Sept. 3 they have raised significant seed money and need an early engineer assessment before final design.
Taylor Miller and Caroline Scoville said the committee had $174,487.93 in committed funds as of Aug. 30 and is working with Deb Ohlde of the North Central Regional Planning Commission on grant applications. The committee presented a proposal to sell engraved bricks as a fundraising mechanism, with price points the council accepted: $250 for a 4x8 brick, $500 for an 8x8 engraved brick and $500 for an 8x8 brick with logo.
Rob Peschel of CES Group provided an estimate for a preliminary engineer/architect report of no more than $8,500. The council gave consensus support to the fundraisers and the direction to get an engineer’s estimate so the committee can proceed with grant applications and final design.
Rachel Tegtmeier resigned from the committee, the minutes show. The committee listed several planned fundraisers including a meal at the Emergency Services Building, a fun run at Fall Fest, a Turkey Trot and a road rally.
Committee leaders said they are coordinating fundraising and grant submissions to avoid duplication with other local projects.
