The Birmingham City Commission voted to authorize the city manager to execute an addendum to the Wimbledon Drive paving contract that substitutes hot‑mix asphalt for the originally planned cape seal, with the city and contractor sharing the incremental cost and the city’s portion capped at $37,500.
Commissioners said the change follows resident complaints that phase 1 work had not been properly completed. At the meeting a resident, Tim Bradley of 519 Wimbledon, thanked the commission for acting: “We really really appreciate what you did for us — it means a lot,” he said. Commissioners emphasized the city will not pass extra costs through the special assessment district to affected property owners.
Under the approved addendum, the final form of the contract will be reviewed by the city attorney and the substance by the city manager in consultation with the city engineer. Staff said they will coordinate the repaving schedule to avoid conflicts with major events and to reduce disruption to residents.
The roll call vote on the motion was recorded in the meeting packet and approved unanimously by the commissioners present. Officials said work will move forward as part of a coordinated effort to correct the earlier work and that the city expects to complete the asphalt replacement in short order.
