The City of Decatur Common Council on May 19 approved community funding and adopted a new administrative policy while hearing event dates from staff.
On the July 4 fireworks, Councilmember Jenny Bowers‑Shultz moved to provide $3,500 to the Decatur Chamber; Matt Dyer seconded and the motion was adopted. Council staff noted the City had donated $2,500 in prior years and that the Chamber carried over $1,000 that had been allocated for a canceled Callithumpian fireworks event. Councilmember Tyler Fullenkamp emphasized that many local businesses also contribute to the fireworks and are not solely city‑funded; Mayor Rickord said people “need to be thanking the businesses rather than complaining.”
The council also adopted the City of Decatur Credit Card Rewards Policy on a motion by Matt Dyer, seconded by Tyler Fullenkamp; the Board of Public Works and Safety had recommended the policy earlier that evening.
Jamie Gephart, Community Coordinator, announced upcoming events: Decatur Pride will be held on Madison Street Plaza on Saturday, June 27 from 3–10 p.m.; Downtown Decatur Day will include a Singo event Friday evening, June 19 from 5–9 p.m., and a full slate of activities on Saturday, June 20.
Next steps: the Chamber will receive the approved $3,500 and staff will implement the credit‑card rewards policy as adopted by the council.
