Council adopts zoning standards for data centers in light-industrial areas

The Olivette City Council on March 24 approved zoning standards for data centers, adding a special-permit requirement and evaluation conditions for facilities proposed in the light industrial district.
"This ordinance would provide standards for data centers in our light industrial district," Carlos Trejo, director of planning and community development, told the council, noting the change establishes a two-step review: planning commission recommendation followed by council action. Trejo said the city has no pending applications and described the ordinance as proactive.
City Attorney explained that a full public hearing had been held at a prior council meeting, so the council could act tonight without reopening the hearing. A council member moved to approve Bill 3060; the motion was seconded and carried unanimously (Council member Lewis—Yes; Council member Pashawn Hellman—Yes; Council member Solomanoff—Yes; Mayor Clark—Yes). The clerk announced Bill 3060 becomes Ordinance 2829.
What happens next: The ordinance requires a special-permit application and conditions to be considered by the planning commission and ultimately the council for any future data center proposals.
