The Hingham School Committee on July 13 appointed Carrie Nee as the committee's liaison to a newly formed town health insurance task force that personnel board staff will lead.
Nee volunteered for the role and was appointed by voice vote after committee discussion. Committee members said the task force was created following a spring town meeting that approved a one-time stipend to help employees offset health-insurance costs and directed a study of whether the town should change its employee contribution model.
"This was in response to a town meeting last spring," Nee said, noting the meeting approved a one-time stipend and a study to address the fact that "Hingham only contributes 50% towards employee health insurance," which members described as the lowest contribution permitted by law and an outlier compared with other communities.
Committee members said the task force has a quick turnaround over the summer with the goal of reporting preliminary findings by October 1. The committee did not debate the specifics of any policy change at the meeting; the task force will study options and present recommendations to the personnel board and municipal leaders.
