A group of Millinocket residents delivered a citizens' petition during public comment at the June 25 council meeting opposing a proposed Acadian Timber housing project near Jerry Pond.
Wendy Serio read the petition, saying the proposed development would place a substantial project directly behind established homes, reduce privacy, increase noise and traffic, and disrupt trails and local ecosystems. She asked for transparent answers about infrastructure costs, environmental effects and long-term obligations for the town.
Chair Grama and other councilors said no formal council or planning-board decision had been made and encouraged residents to register their concerns at Planning Board hearings, which the chair said are the appropriate venue for technical questions about runoff, roads and wetlands. The town clerk confirmed receipt of the petition and said it is pending review by the town attorney.
Other members of the public offered alternate views: one resident argued that new housing could attract families and expand the tax base; another urged the town and developer to consider trail preservation. Councilors reiterated the developer has held public meetings and that the planning process is ongoing.
