The commission approved the nominating committee’s recommendations to forward three names for the North Carolina obligatory seat on the Mid‑Atlantic Fishery Management Council.
Chris Back Savage presented the nominating committee slate and explained state statute requires the commission to approve nominees and forward them to the governor for consideration; the governor must submit three names to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, who appoints one. The nominees are Robert Rule, Mary Ellen Balance and Thomas Newman, all described in staff materials as commercial fishermen and vessel owners from eastern North Carolina.
A commissioner moved to approve all three names; the motion was seconded and passed by roll call with recorded ayes. The commission did not provide a public endorsement of a preferred candidate and reiterated that final appointment rests with the governor and the Secretary of Commerce.
Staff said biographical summaries are included in the briefing materials and will accompany the forwarded nominations. No further action was taken at the meeting.
