Grand Island’s Economic Development Advisory Board reviewed several artist submissions for the town’s electrical-box art project and selected three designs and locations for this year’s program.
Members described the selected designs as: a colorful depiction of the Grand Island Bridge intended to be a welcoming landmark image; a child-centered design inspired by the July 4 parade; and a three-panel illustrative piece highlighting local wildflowers and a ‘home’ motif. The board agreed to place the selected wraps at three locations to distribute public art across the island (Grand Island Boulevard/Bedell, in front of Tops Plaza at the gas-station corner, and the Kegabine/balloon site), and assigned follow-up tasks: priming boxes, ordering supplies and coordinating with artists.
One member raised a scheduling question about bridge replacement work expected in 2028 and whether boxes near that structure should be used now; staff noted that some boxes are state-owned and that permits are already in place for at least one state box, so locations were chosen in part on permit status. Board members said they will contact artists to confirm timelines and asked one member to handle application paperwork and supply purchases; the board will reimburse documented expenses.
