Student government representatives told the Annette Island School District board they will present a resolution at the Alaska Student Services Association (ASSA) conference calling on the governor to declare a state of disaster emergency concerning suicide and mental health.
"We believe that suicide and mental health are very important issues... it's not enough being done to address it," Reese said, describing the resolution the student government plans to take to ASSA. The students said the resolution asks the governor to declare a state of disaster emergency to elevate attention and resources on the issue.
Reese also said the student government is bidding to host the ASSA spring conference for 2026–27 and will present that hosting proposal at the conference. Board members asked how many students would attend the event; students and staff said about 10 people will travel.
Why it matters: student leaders framed the resolution as an attempt to raise urgency about youth mental health and suicide prevention. The students asked the board and community to support their advocacy at ASSA.
Next steps: the students depart for the ASSA conference tomorrow and will present the resolution and hosting proposal there.
