Council updates on downtown fence, sidewalk schedule and town building repairs

Staff said materials and a deposit (about half the total) for a downtown fence have been recorded in the payables and that the contractor will call Miss Utility before installing the fence; the project is expected to proceed within the next two weeks. The clerk’s payables list also included a $16,900 invoice to Virginia Fence Builders Inc.
The sidewalk contractor is tentatively scheduled to start the week of March 10, staff said, and councilmembers asked staff to provide updates as the work is scheduled. Members also raised concerns about the town building’s condition — deteriorating brick pillars, rotted doors and window seals — and asked that capital improvements oversight include internal maintenance and repairs.
Councilmembers suggested assigning responsibility to staff (including public-works staff) to inventory needed building repairs and return with a plan and cost estimates to the council. No formal capital appropriation vote occurred at this meeting; staff said they will provide cost estimates and schedule follow-up at the next meeting.
