Newfield council adopts budget with no local tax increase; approves multiple resolutions and ordinances

Finance Chair Mr. Carrow told the council the adopted budget carries no increase in the borough’s local tax rate; he also noted the school tax will rise 5.33 percent and that the county is conducting a re-evaluation of borough properties. He said the 2025 audit was completed and that the borough will accept bids for 2–4 Northwest Boulevard on June 23, with an award scheduled for June 24.
On motions and votes, the council unanimously approved several budget and licensing resolutions on the consent calendar. Highlights include: - Resolution 57-26: insertion of $2,000 (JIF safety incentive program) into the 2026 current fund budget — adopted unanimously. - Resolution 58-26: insertion of $5,427.88 (Clean Communities Program) into the 2026 current fund budget — adopted unanimously. - Resolution 59-26 and 60-26: renewal of a plenary retail distribution license (Newfield Discount Liquors LLC) and a plenary retail consumption license (Harlow Investments LLC), respectively — both renewed unanimously. - Resolution 61-26: awarding a contract to purchase a 2027 Ford F-250 utility truck with snow plow for Public Works — adopted unanimously. - Resolution 62-26: authorizing advertisement for sale of certain borough lands under the Local Lands and Buildings Law — adopted unanimously. - Resolution 63-26: approval of disbursements — adopted unanimously.
Council also introduced two ordinances for first reading and set public hearings for July 9, 2026: Ordinance 2026-7 (sale of land, Block 100, Lot 20, Gorgo Lane) and Ordinance 2026-8 (creation of Chapter 82, Tree Removal, Protection and Replacement). Both were introduced on unanimous votes.
The council moved, seconded and unanimously approved a motion authorizing Engineer Wayne Johnson to submit Church and Hazel streets to the New Jersey Department of Transportation program for 2027.
On minutes and records, the council approved the work session and regular meeting minutes from May 14, 2026, and the tax collector’s report; the roll-call vote recorded five ayes (Mr. Carrow, Mr. Corwonski, Mr. Curcio, Mr. Miller and Mrs. Engle) and one abstention (Miss Renzi).
The meeting closed with routine approvals for a mercantile license for Jan Capri Eclectic Designs LLC and a Newfield Community Play Date event July 1 at the Grove. Public hearing dates for the introduced ordinances were set for July 9.
A follow-up: the council will hold the public hearings on the two ordinances on July 9, 2026; pending outcomes, land sale and tree-protection measures will move to final adoption.
