Character Counts reports strong school support, launches fourth‑grade pilot and ‘Character in Action’ club

Melinda Ray, the Character Counts coordinator, presented an update to the board on July 14 outlining teacher and student survey results and new program plans.

Ray said 95% of teachers reported their schools support Character Counts, 93% welcomed Character Counts coaches in classrooms, and 91% of teachers reported the program had a positive impact in class. In student polling of primarily 4th and 5th graders, 82% said they enjoyed the classes and 72% reported seeing a positive impact.

Ray described next steps, including a pilot program called “Character in Action” at Matapeake Elementary that will let 5th‑grade student ambassadors lead a civic project during the school year. She also said staff and an advisory board will establish a Wayne Humphreys Student of Character award to honor a graduating 5th grader at each elementary school.

Commissioners asked about transition supports from elementary to middle school; Ray said the 5th‑grade lessons will be adjusted to emphasize self‑respect and leadership and that volunteers are available but not trained as counselors.
