Library reports rising usage, $25,000 state literacy grant and end of ZipBooks funding

Carpinteria ' The city librarian presented the Carpinteria Community Library's July monthly report, highlighting strong summer programming, visitor and circulation growth, staffing updates and grant news.
Staff said the summer reading program that began June 15 saw record participation with 125 people attending a Magic Show program, and that the library now has 5,512 registered cardholders (more than one-third of the city's population) and more than 80,000 in-person visits in the past year. Collection size and circulation metrics were reported: roughly 61,521 physical materials circulated in the fiscal year and about 15,000 print materials comprise the collection.
On funding, staff reported that the statewide "ZipBooks" program will be discontinued due to the state project not receiving continued funding; staff said the library may discuss alternatives with other libraries in the Black Gold system. Separately, the library reported receiving an "intent to fund" notice from the California State Librarian for a $25,000 California Library Literacy Service grant, subject to final state budget approval, and noted that the New York Times online access will be available to cardholders for one year under a state arrangement.
Council received and filed the library report by unanimous motion.
