Carpinteria ' At the July 13 council meeting, the sheriff's chief delivered a two-month public safety report that listed arrests, traffic incidents and community outreach efforts and warned residents that enforcement of ebike and bicycle safety rules would ramp up.
The chief recounted several arrests including multiple gun-related arrests following a traffic stop, citations for battery and for violating restraining orders, and arrests tied to shoplifting and assault on officers. He described traffic enforcement related to modified ebikes and motorcycles carrying unhelmeted juvenile passengers and said parents agreed to remove illegal modifications. The chief said deputies confiscated the kind of fireworks that "go up in the air and blow up" during the July 4 weekend and issued three citations.
He reported four DUIs and four ebike or scooter traffic accidents in the prior two months and said deputies would soon issue ebike and bicycle vehicle-code violation citations. He emphasized safety: "Please ride safely, wear your helmet, and obey the vehicle code." The chief also highlighted public outreach including presentations at lifeguard camp and the Fourth of July parade and recommended residents use the main number for non-emergencies.
Council members asked for additional details about staffing at special events; the chief said the city had two dedicated deputies on day and night shifts plus a senior deputy and sergeant, and that for a recent festival the sheriff's department staffed six deputies each night under contract to the event organizer.
