Chubbuck council honors Staff Sergeant Butterfield with distinguished service medal

The Chubbuck City Council on July 15 presented Staff Sergeant Butterfield of the Chubbuck Police Department with the department's distinguished service medal, honoring more than three decades of law-enforcement service.
The police chief explained that the department's awards committee reviews nominations against established criteria before forwarding recommendations to the chief. "The distinguished service medal may be presented by the department to a member who demonstrates unwavering and long-term exceptional dedication and outstanding service to the department, the community, and the law enforcement profession," the chief said, explaining the panel and review process.
The chief noted Butterfield previously received two other department awards, including a medal of valor and a distinguished unit citation for actions during a high-risk warrant when two officers were shot. The chief said Butterfield assisted a fellow officer to safety during that incident and has since continued in the criminal investigations division.
The chief told the council Butterfield retired as a lieutenant in October 2023 but returned two months later as a staff sergeant. "For over 30 years Staff Sergeant Butterfield has served our agency and community with exceptional dedication," the chief said, and asked attendees to join a round of applause. Butterfield's spouse pinned the medal and the chief invited council members and family for a photograph.
The recognition was ceremonial; no formal council action was required. The council then resumed its agenda on budget items.
