Braxton County Schools superintendent presents plan for new athletic complex, seeks donations

At a Braxton County Schools board meeting, the superintendent presented an aerial overview and draft floor plans for a proposed athletic complex and urged the community to help fund the project.

The plan calls for a turfed football/soccer field with an eight‑lane track, separate home and visitor sides, a new athletic building with home and away locker rooms, concession stands, restrooms and storage, plus renovations to the softball field (turf and a new press box) and construction of a new baseball field and indoor batting cage in an annex. The superintendent said cross‑country lines and additional on‑campus facilities would also be included.

The project team produced a booklet with renderings and a link for donations, and the superintendent said she will distribute copies to board members and establish an ad hoc committee to move the work forward. "It's desperately needed," she said, describing the condition of current facilities and the plan's intent to provide safe, modern fields and amenities.

The superintendent cited a Channel 3 interview in which a student said, "Larger schools get nice things, but just because we go to a small school doesn't mean we shouldn't have the same things," and argued that improved athletic facilities can boost student engagement and academic outcomes. She invited board members and community members to tour the existing athletic building and review the draft plans.

No funding commitments or formal contract awards were recorded at the meeting; the superintendent said the next steps include forming the ad hoc committee and circulating donation materials.
