Professor Remus proposed that the commission form an ad hoc committee to draft community anti‑bias and inclusivity materials following recent public testimony about discrimination in local establishments. Remus said the materials would explain how businesses can respond to discrimination, how to create safer, more inclusive environments and the difference between hate speech and hate crimes.
"Basically, it's educational materials to post on the city website that educates businesses on how to deal with discrimination issues," Remus said, describing a short series of drafts and an anticipated three‑meeting cadence for the subcommittee. Commissioners suggested distributing materials with business license renewals, posting them on the city website or hosting town halls and short videos aimed at business owners.
Several commissioners volunteered for the ad hoc committee; staff said the materials would be coordinated with the city communications team and could be referenced in renewal notices or online resources pending council approval. The committee will report back with drafts and a dissemination plan at the September meeting.
