County engineer updates: BUILD grant planning, Mack truck auction and Argo‑Margaret intersection work
Summary
County engineer Dan Dahlke reported progress on paving and storm repairs, outlined a BUILD grant application to fund multi‑phase road planning (conceptual total ~$55M, phase 1 planning ask imminent) and asked the commission to consider engineering work for the Argo‑Margaret intersection; commissioners also discussed selling surplus Mack trucks (estimated gross ~$1.29M).

Dan Dahlke, St. Clair County engineer, gave commissioners a series of infrastructure updates and funding proposals at the work session.
Dahlke said paving crews have resumed hot‑mix work (noting projects on North of Ash and Pine Mountain), described recent pipe and inlet repairs at Pinell Lake and Pope's Chapel, and listed short‑term repairs planned for Camp Creek Road.
He also briefed the commission on a BUILD grant application to fund preliminary engineering for a major multi‑phase road and utility project, explaining the broad plan totals roughly $55 million and that phase 1 planning would be the immediate focus. "The whole plan, general plan, basically, is $55,000,000," Dahlke said; the deadline for the application was the coming Tuesday.
Separately, Dahlke and commissioners discussed an Alabama Power transmission line project that will require coordination and possible pole relocations, and they identified the Sandy Road/Argo‑Margaret intersection as needing turn lanes and engineering analysis. Dahlke recommended contracting an engineering consultant to perform traffic counts and design work.
Commissioners also reviewed a proposed surplus equipment plan and possible auction for Mack trucks; early estimates suggest a gross sale figure in the neighborhood of $1.29 million, with final proceeds subject to auction fees.
No final contract award or funding commitment was made in the work session; commissioners directed staff to proceed with grant paperwork, solicit engineering cost estimates and return with bid documents or procurement recommendations.
