The Bonner Springs City Council voted March 24 to approve purchase of a replacement belt filter press for the city’s wastewater treatment plant for $399,735.
Public Works director Matt Beets told council the existing press, built in 2009, is aging, harder to service and increasingly costly to repair. Staff budgeted for a full turnkey system earlier in the year with an estimate near $600,000, he said, but because the facility already has plumbing and infrastructure to accept a second press the installed cost will be roughly $399,735—well inside the department’s budget.
Council moved and seconded the purchase; the clerk recorded a roll call and the motion passed. Staff said the new unit is essentially a newer version of the current press and should reduce downtime and parts‑availability issues. Beets described the process inside the plant as corrosive and said parts deteriorate faster than expected, creating the need for an updated unit.
What happens next: Staff will finalize procurement with Environmental Process Equipment Company and schedule installation. The purchase was described as budgeted and expected to fit current appropriations for the wastewater fund.
