The Art & Public Spaces Committee on Tuesday approved a map of six pre‑approved sculpture locations along the Lafayette‑Moraga Regional Trail, designated a site for a Doug Haney piece and signed off on uniform 'Do not climb' signs for park and trail entrances.
Art & Public Spaces Committee chair Holly Hartz said the locations were selected to avoid East Bay Regional Park District easements and to minimize ongoing maintenance: "So I took some time along the trail and found other locations that would appropriately house a sculpture," Mackenzie said during the presentation, describing criteria such as set‑backs more than five feet from the trail and placements away from existing vegetation.
The committee discussed visual backdrops and visitor sightlines: members favored sites that face the commons or park areas rather than residential streets to maximize public interaction and visual cohesion with existing sculptures. Committee member Graham Teal and others noted advantages of grouping sculptures so viewers encounter multiple works along a walk.
After the presentation the committee voted to approve locations labeled A through F on the Mackenzie map. The committee then considered a separate motion to place Doug Haney’s sculpture (Full Circle No. 2) at designated location C; Teresa Onodo moved to approve that location and the committee voted in favor.
On signage, staff described an order of roughly 11 entrance signs reading 'Do not climb on the art' to be installed at park and trail entrances rather than beside every sculpture. Mackenzie said installation height and mounting would be coordinated with Public Works supervisor Ruben Ochoa; committee members asked staff to consult Ochoa on best practices.
Votes on the trail map, Haney placement and the signage motion were taken by voice and approved. The committee said once the location map is adopted by the Town Council, future sculpture approvals at these pre‑approved sites can be processed administratively through this committee and Parks & Recreation review.
The committee closed the item with staff noting the map and signage will next go to Parks & Recreation and Town Council as required.
